The Ford Center for the Performing Arts and UM Opera Theatre are holding auditions for the role of Amahl for the upcoming production of Amahl and the Night Visitors on December 1. Director, Julia Aubrey, asks that boys ages 9 – 13 prepare the attached excerpt from the opera for the audition as well as an audition sheet. Amahl’s role is the centerpiece of the story and requires an unchanged soprano voice with the ability to reach a high G. The singer will be amplified to boost the voice in the large hall, but should be a secure musician and a willing actor able to take direction. The other roles are sung by graduate students or professional guest artists. Some detail for the audition process:
- The auditions will take place from 2:00pm – 4:00pm on Sunday, October 8 in the Main Hall of the Ford Center.
- Please bring the completed audition sheet with you when you arrive.
- You will present a more confident audition if you have the excerpt memorized.
- The UM Opera Theatre coach, Amanda Johnston, will play for the auditions.
- We will create a friendly atmosphere for the audition!
- I will cast one Amahl and an understudy who will attend all rehearsals.
- Music rehearsals will begin October 16.
- The children will need to practice independently, but we will make sure they receive adequate preparation.
- Please make note of the evening rehearsals the final performance week.
- Please make sure your child understands the commitment involved if cast in this role.
